Für Elise

Bagatelle in A minor WoO 59

Perseverance and Für Elise

Submitted by Martin Crook. Story added around September 2011.

My musical training was dedicated exclusively to classical guitar, so I never learned this piece, or in fact any piano until 2003, when I decided it was high time to teach myself piano. Unfortunately soon after this I suffered a bad skiing accident which paralysed my left side. The biggest loss of all was the inability to return to guitar, so to make up for it, I have started to relearn all the piano for right hand. Fur Elise is, I find, a piece which translates well to single-handed play, and I continue to teach myself this piece daily. I still miss my guitar(s) but the power and beauty of Fur Elise is beginning to sweeten the loss.
